With no color in the picture, contrast decides everything: how far away the piece still works, and how much attention it takes.
Heavy black shapes hold a large wall and read clearly from across the room. Fine lines and pale grays reward a closer look — a hallway, the wall behind a desk, a narrow space between doors.
The portraits work differently again. They put a face in the room and people react to them, so they suit a wall you want looked at rather than one you want to disappear.
Because there is no color, nothing in the piece can clash with the room. The one thing worth getting right is scale: too small on a large wall and the print reads as an afterthought.
