Abstract art works when you don't want the picture to tell a story. There is nothing to recognize — only color and shape. That makes it the easiest thing to place: you don't have to match a theme, only a tone.
There are two kinds of piece here. Some are saturated and high-contrast, with clear shapes and strong color. Others are quieter and more faded, with soft gradients where the colors almost merge. If the wall is empty and the room is neutral, take the bolder one — it becomes the focal point. If the room is already full of pattern and strong detail, a patterned rug, a colored sofa, open shelving, take the calmer one, or the two will fight each other.
The simplest way to choose is to pick up a color the room already has. Look at the cushions, the rug, a wood tone, the curtains. A piece that repeats that color will look as though it was bought with the furniture rather than added later.
Abstract work suits minimalist, Scandinavian and mid-century interiors, because all three are built on form rather than ornament. In a warm room with wood and linen, the softer, earthier pieces sit better. In cooler, white rooms, the more graphic ones with sharper contrast do.
