In The Eyes of the Skin, first published in 1996 and now a standard text in architectural theory, he argued that Western design had handed everything over to a single sense. Sight took the whole budget. Touch, sound, smell and the body's own sense of weight and temperature were left with nothing. His term for it is ocularcentrism, and his complaint is not aesthetic but practical: a space designed for the eye alone under-serves the person living in it.
Pallasmaa's point about touch is the one that matters here. He treats it as the sense that reads material — texture, weight, density, temperature — and the one that gives us a sense of depth that vision alone cannot supply. A surface tells you what something is made of in a way that a colour never can. Two walls painted the identical shade, one smooth plaster and one lime wash, are not the same wall, and nobody needs to be told why.
Now put that next to where interiors have actually gone. The dominant direction is quiet: warm neutrals, low contrast, no strong colour anywhere. It is a beautiful direction and it has one structural weakness. When you remove colour, you remove the thing that normally creates interest. Something has to do that work instead, and the only variable left is surface.

You would expect texture to be a touch problem. Fingers on a surface, mechanoreceptors in the skin, signals to the somatosensory cortex — the strip of brain that handles physical sensation on the body. That is the textbook version, and for actual touch it is broadly right.
But brain imaging has been complicating that picture for two decades. Researchers using fMRI have found that simply looking at images of surfaces with different structural properties produces activity in somatosensory areas — the touch regions — even when the hands are doing nothing at all. The visual system does not process surface on its own and then hand a description over to some higher decision-making area. It recruits the touch machinery directly.
This is not an isolated result. A broader body of work has shown that primary sensory areas long treated as belonging to one sense each are considerably less exclusive than assumed. Texture explored by hand produces activity in visual areas. Texture presented visually produces activity in touch areas. The brain appears to hold a shared representation of surface that several senses can reach, rather than separate silos that occasionally exchange messages.
There is a related finding worth knowing about, because it makes the same point from another direction. Watching another person be touched activates the same somatosensory regions that respond when you are touched yourself. The brain does not require the contact to be yours for the touch circuitry to engage. Seeing is sufficient.
Put those together and something clicks. When you stand in front of a textured piece and get that faint sense of what it would feel like under your fingers, that is not imagination filling a gap. It is the touch regions of your brain doing their normal job on visual input.
Texture Works in the Eye, Not the Hand
This is the whole argument of this guide, and it has a straightforward consequence.
The thing that produces the sensation of surface is not the surface itself. It is the pattern of light and micro-shadow that a surface generates, which the eye reads and the brain interprets as material. That pattern is the signal. The physical relief is merely one way of producing it.

What Actually Creates Texture on a Canvas
A canvas print is doing two things at once, and most descriptions only mention one.
The first is the weave. Poly-cotton canvas has a physical woven structure, and that structure is genuinely three-dimensional — thousands of tiny ridges and valleys across the surface. This is real relief, not an image of relief. These two layers are not competing. They stack. The brain integrates both into a single impression of surface — one that is more convincing than either layer would be alone.

Not All Texture Is the Same Texture
Here is a distinction that almost no product listing makes, and that changes what you end up with.
"Textured" gets used as a single label for surfaces that behave in completely different ways. The two you will meet most often in modern abstract work are brushwork and plaster — and they are not interchangeable.
Brushwork texture is directional. It has a gesture in it: a stroke that started somewhere, moved, and stopped. Your eye follows that direction, which means the piece carries movement and a certain amount of energy even in a muted palette. It suits rooms that need a little life without needing colour.
Plaster or mineral texture is non-directional. It reads as a material state rather than an action — a wall, a stone face, a worked surface with no single gesture running through it. It is quieter, and it sits closer to the architecture of the room than to the idea of a painting. In a space with lime-washed or micro-cement walls, it can be almost seamless.
The practical consequence: if your room already has movement — patterned textiles, a strong rug, plants, a busy view — plaster texture settles it. There is a third kind worth naming, because it is the one that photographs best and disappoints most often: printed texture with no real substrate under it. A texture-heavy image on thin, smooth paper behind glass has the picture of a surface and none of the behaviour of one. It looks superb in the product shot, taken at an angle under studio lighting, and reads as a flat photograph on your wall.
Relief and Impasto: What You Are Paying For
Physically raised pieces — impasto, plaster relief, sculptural texture with several millimetres of real depth — occupy the premium end of this category, and they do deliver something real. From close range, under raking light, the depth is unmistakable and a print will not match it.
The question is what that costs beyond the price, and how often you are in the position to see the difference.
Dust. Every valley in a relief surface is a dust trap, and unlike a flat surface you cannot simply wipe it. Wiping drags dust deeper into the recesses; anything more aggressive risks the raised edges, which are usually the most fragile part of the piece. In practice, relief work in a normal home dulls over a few years and there is no easy way to reverse it.
Weight and fixing. Relief pieces are heavy, and weight decides your hanging options. On a solid wall it is a non-issue. On plasterboard, or in a rental where you would rather not drill, it removes several approaches from the table before you start.
Transport. Raised edges are the first thing to chip, and damage in transit is not always visible in the corner of a piece where it happens. This is a real risk with international shipping and one of the reasons relief work carries higher return rates.
Cost. Hand-applied relief is labour, and labour is the most expensive component in any object. You are often paying three to five times the price of a well-made printed equivalent.

You are paying a substantial premium, accepting a maintenance problem and a fragility problem, to gain a difference that is legible from under a metre — in a room where the normal viewing distance is two to four metres and the piece hangs above furniture you cannot easily stand behind.
For a small number of people that trade is worth it, usually when a single piece is the entire focus of a room. For most, a printed texture on a substantial woven canvas gives the same result in the position it will actually occupy, without the compromises.
When Texture Works and When It Fights You
Texture is not a universal upgrade. It has conditions.
It works hardest in low-contrast, neutral compositions. When the palette is quiet and the tonal range is narrow, surface is the only depth available. Remove it and the piece has nothing left — it becomes a flat area of beige on a wall. It fights you when the room already has too much surface. Exposed brick, heavy plaster, coarse jute, a chunky boucle chair, wide-plank oak — a room can be saturated with texture. Adding more does not add depth; it adds noise. In a room like that, the calmest surface on the wall is often the strongest choice.

Canvas or Framed Poster for Textured Work
For texture specifically, the format question has a clearer answer than usual. Canvas has the weave, so it starts with genuine micro-relief before the image is even printed. It also has no glass, which matters more than people expect: glass adds a reflective plane in front of the surface, and reflection is precisely what destroys the readability of texture.
There is one case where a framed poster still wins for a texture-forward image: a wall directly opposite a window, where a canvas would be lit flat all day and the texture would rarely be revealed anyway. In that position you may as well take the precision.
